There was a group of us planning and building a student Get Away Special or "Gascan" to go up on the shuttle. It was one of the few things that made NASA seem like "our space program". I always remember him saying that he "was not important" when we asked him about his work on the Von Braun team. But he was very important to thousands of young engineers like me.
