Lunar Plans in Question

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Econominst.com is sponsoring a debate on the question of whether we should return to the Moon, Returning to the moon- This house believes that NASA should not send humans back to the moon. Michael N. Gold is defending, Gregg Maryniak is against.

Florida Today reports Panel: Moon within NASA budget’s reach

The United States cannot afford to return American astronauts to the moon under the NASA budget currently proposed by the Obama administration, a presidential panel said Wednesday.

“Your budget problems are bigger than your technical problems,” he said.

The Obama administration’s 2010 budget for NASA represents a $26.5 billion cut from previous projections.

Gary Pullium, a vice president with The Aerospace Corp., said NASA won’t be able to return to the moon by 2020 under those constraints. “Given our assessment of the 2010 budget and what we believe about cost and schedule, we just simply said there is not enough money in this budget in the near term to do the human lunar return,” he said.

How do we get young Canadians to reach for the stars? by Sumitra Rajagopalan

Forty years later, the sequel is being written as the US and many other countries, including Canada, gear up for the next Moon shot. Like the Sputnik and Apollo programs, this new space race is a golden opportunity to inspire the next generation of space explorers and enthusiasts. But, first, they need this generation to tune in.

Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk is to undertake in the months ahead aboard the International Space Station, where he will remotely control and drive a robot parked at CSA’s offices near Montreal. Open-source coding could allow participants to program lunar robots in real time, with all the excitement streamed live over the Internet.

From the Canadian Space Society

The CSS connected with the Hamilton Police Pipes and Drums to record a tune to honour Bob Thirsk and Julie Payette currently in orbit. The tune of choice?  “The Maple Leaf Forever”, a tune that dates back to Canadian confederation and has been played for dignitaries at official functions at home and around the world. To download and listen to the recording sent to the astronauts, click here.

NSS Supports NewSpace

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

The Space Frontier Foundation has extended registration, until July 1st, 2009, for its NewSpace 2009 conference, which will be held at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California from Friday, July 17 through Monday, July 20. See the full Press Release.

William Watson, Executive Director of the Space Frontier Foundation, states,

“The human settlement of space is a goal shared by both the National Space Society and the Space Frontier Foundation. The pursuit and advocacy of such a lofty ambition requires those who dream together to work together. The Space Frontier Foundation’s annual NewSpace conference focuses on the entrepreneurial space developments that may expedite the day our species permanently occupies heavenly bodies. As a fellow National Space Society member, I invite you to NASA Ames in Mountain View, CA July 17-20th to help us jump the technical, regulatory, and political hurtles remaining for NewSpace.”

Press Release

June 23, 2009

SUBJECT: Registration for the Space Frontier Foundation’s NewSpace 2009 Conference Extended
Nyack, NY, June 22, 2009  - Honor the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing by spending 4 days discussing by the latest developments in the NewSpace industry at the NewSpace 2009 Conference. The Space Frontier Foundation has extended registration until July 1st, 2009 for space professionals and enthusiasts everywhere.
Attendees at the conference will not only listen to giants in the industry speak, but will also have access to intriguing exhibits ranging from NewSpace media and entertainment to the latest technologies. Network with fellow enthusiasts at the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS), Teachers in Space, and the National Space Society (NSS) booths or pick up gear at the SFF Storefront. You will also learn about the launch of the International Space University’s new MBA program at the ISU exhibit.
Another of the exciting exhibits is VirtuePlay’s premier of the Lunar Racing Championship game. Attendees will have the opportunity to play “LRC” game on D-Box motion gaming seats, creating the feeling of off-roading on the moon and flying around craters in one-sixth gravity.
““Lunar Racing Championship”, (LRC) was developed using NASA’s lunar topography from the 1994 Clementine mission, to provide immersion racing on the moon in 3D. The software realistically simulates the moon’s low gravity, and lack of atmosphere. Racing vehicles off-road is pedestrian compared to piloting advanced rocket cars off-world in no atmosphere. “LRC” puts you in the cockpit of a futuristic racing machine that is part rally car, part spaceship for high speed competition set within the “magnificent desolation” of Earth’s moon.” Mary Duda, CEO of VirtuePlay Inc.
Interested in hosting an exhibit at NS09? Contact exhibit manager Jake Welch for information and exhibit registration at jake.welch@spacefrontier.org.

Blog for and about space settlement on July 20th

July 20th 2009 is the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. July 20th is also Space Exploration Day. After 40 years of space exploration it is time to begin space settlement. In order to honor all who risked their lives for space exploration and all who are dedicated to opening the new era of space settlement, we ask everyone to blog about space settlement on July 20th. Feel free to write about any aspect of space settlement, and about settlement at any space location — orbital settlements, settlements on the Moon, Mars, asteroids, or any place else. If you want more information or need ideas about space settlement go to the NSS Space Settlement Nexus.

SIGN UP YOUR BLOG HERE so we know which blogs are participating and we can send traffic your way. See list of participating blogs.
